If you are still using Windows 10, be aware that Microsoft has officially ended support for the operating system today. While your PC will continue to function, it will no longer receive critical security updates, which could leave it vulnerable to malware. Users have three options to maintain security: upgrade to Windows 11 for free if compatible, purchase a new PC with Windows 11 pre-installed, or enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for an additional year of support.

Enrolling in ESU is a straightforward process and is now available for free in many cases, allowing users to continue using Windows 10 securely. This option is particularly useful for those who may not be ready to transition to Windows 11 immediately.

To sign up for Extended Security Updates, first ensure your PC is up to date by checking the version in the Settings menu. If updates are available, install them before proceeding. It’s also important to log in with an administrator account to complete the enrollment process.

Next, verify if your PC is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11. If an upgrade option appears, it is recommended to take it, as it provides continued support. If not, you can proceed with enrolling in ESU by navigating to Update & Security in the Settings menu and selecting the “Enroll Now” link.

When enrolling, you will need to back up your PC settings. While the first 5 GB of storage for backup is free, users may need to pay for additional storage through Microsoft’s OneDrive service. Signing in to a Microsoft account is necessary for this process, which may require switching from a local login.

Once you have completed the enrollment steps, you will receive confirmation that your device is set to receive Extended Security Updates. This gives you an additional year to decide on your next steps regarding upgrading to Windows 11.

With this extension, you have more time to explore your options for upgrading. Stay tuned for any updates regarding Windows 10 and future support as the situation evolves.
