As the PlayStation 5 nears its fifth anniversary, Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD are looking ahead to the next generation of gaming with the upcoming PS6. Recent statements from Sony have provided a clearer timeline for when this next console may be released.

In a recent video featuring AMD’s Senior Vice President Jack Huynh and PlayStation’s lead architect Mark Cerny, the two discussed advancements from their collaborative project, Project Amethyst. This initiative focuses on integrating machine learning technology into video games, highlighting three major innovations: Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression.

Neural Arrays enable compute units to function collectively as a single AI engine, enhancing data processing. Radiance Cores introduce dedicated hardware for improved real-time ray tracing performance, while Universal Compression aims to optimize data storage in the GPU, reducing memory bandwidth requirements.

During the video, Cerny hinted at the future of these technologies, mentioning the anticipated release of PlayStation’s next console. He expressed enthusiasm for the potential improvements that Universal Compression could bring, including reduced power consumption and enhanced graphics fidelity.

Cerny acknowledged that while the technologies are still in the simulation phase, the early results are promising. He indicated that fans can expect the PS6 to arrive in “a few years’ time,” although the exact timeline remains uncertain.

This vague timeframe could suggest a release as soon as two years from now or potentially extend to five years. As developments continue, gamers will have to stay tuned for more concrete details regarding the PS6’s launch.
